Amazon, subjected to DDoS attacks on other sites
Attacks against the DNS to provide a large number of Internet e-commerce companies – including Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Expedia – Internet shopping site, spent a good off-line Wednesday evening, two days before Christmas.
NeuStar Inc., the company provides DNS services, UltraDNS brand, confirmed the attack took place Wednesday afternoon, out website or about an hour so that it is extremely weak. A customer support representative who answered the hotline, said the attack was aimed at NeuStar’s facilities in Palo Alto and San Jose, California, and Yi Lunge Goldberg, vice president and corporate communications company confirmed NeuStar, about 16:45 seconds, “Our alarm went.”
Goldberg said the company received a disproportionately large number of the entry into force of the referral system, and analyzes its attacks. NeuStar’s deployment of a “mitigation response” within a few minutes of the attack, he said, the problem under control within an hour. The limited response to the question, Northern California, he said.
In addition to high-profile Web sites, dozens of small websites rely on Amazon’s web hosting services, has also taken the attack. Amazon’s S3 and EC2 services, subject to the problem, according to large-scale basis, Amazon’s chief Internet Evangelist, who retweeted a report to the effect have not been clarified and confirmed in subsequent tweet.
A short period of time Wednesday night, “including the UltraDNS” is the most common Google search term and may be crazy technical staff on the site trying to figure out what was happening with their website.
The DNS provider site requires translation of character-based web site, people can remember the IP address of the actual use of the Web site lists its own on the Internet. When a DNS provider, overwhelmed the IP address of a malicious request, the system can be overloaded, preventing legitimate users reach their destination.
Amazon’s Web services, announced the general health of the console clear Pacific Standard Time, 18:40 or so, saying that DNS resolution has returned to normal. Amazon and other large sites that appear to 17:40 or so to resume, but some other sites to continue to report a problem, until around 6 pm
Needless to say, so the timing of the shutdown can not be worse because the holiday rush procrastination in order to ensure that they can get a day’s shipping gift delivery date before Christmas.
Wolf Austad, a CNET reader, written in the Pacific Standard Time 17:00 Wednesday about the report at the last minute to buy gifts, and his wife has deviated from the right from Amazon.com. He later reported that his transactions were stored in the history of Amazon.com, once he was able to return to the scene. However, “now I need to explain why my wife, she is a gift for her 26th,” he said in an e-mail.
UltraDNS’s suffered a similar attack earlier this year, the show Amazon, Salesforce.com, as well as other sites. Goldberg describes the attack on Wednesday, less than 1, because it affects fewer customers.
However, Amazon is not a small customer. Goldberg declined to comment on specific customer affected by power outages, and said the company has not yet identified the source NeuStar attacks.
Experts believe that an attack could be more extensive.
“This is not the expansion of the UltraDNS,” said Bill Woodcock, research director of Packet Clearing House, business domain name server, and support for international Internet exchange points around the world.
“It’s hard to say at this point the number of DDoS attacks, and how much is the collateral damage of the attack, was considered in other areas,” like a domino effect, he said. “There routing problem in a number of major European exchanges, also causing major Internet service providers face a higher load on the router, and by reducing the packet.”
