Intel’s goal of light peak to replace today’s cables

Intel Corp. on Wednesday released a technology called optical peak, the hope of eventually will replace a single type of optical fiber link the seeds of today’s personal computers profusion of different cables.
The earth, the new Perlmutter and promoting cooperation and general manager of Intel Architecture Group, demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco-ray peak, and said that the technology component, although the peaks are not just personal computers, will be completed by 2010.
“We want to see a single cable,” Baghdadi said, one thing is some of the smaller laptops way is to let the system around the edge of cable ports have arisen.
In a demonstration, Perlmutter display connected to the entire display high-definition video, fiber optic light transmission phase of the Peak to monitor the computer. The cable can be up to 100 meters, and can carry 10Gbps in both directions at the same time the data, but Intel is expected to reach in the next 10 years, 100Gbps, Johnson said, Intel’s director of Ur optical input output program office.
The company envisioned as a cable, now results in the replacement light displays peaks, external drives, scanners and any other things that can be embedded to the computer. A PC, the port can be bright peaks for different equipment, or the number of connections may lead to a hub – perhaps more than one external monitor their own connections – Ur said.
It is unclear how much the cost of the technology for how many years will be how to become mainstream. And wireless communications technology – Intel itself to the promotion of ultra-wideband multi-wideband (UWB) – provides some attracting more and completely free of cables.
Peak optical processing technology, while supporting a variety of communication protocols, and even the quality of service provisions to ensure a high priority, such as video traffic receive preferential treatment, he said.
In addition, Intel said that at present studying the optical fiber with copper lamp, so that the Peak can be used to power devices to the PC into the work, he said.
Cable itself is durable, Ziller said: “You can tie these knots, it will still work.”
Intel’s influence in the calculation of the market a lot, but supports the establishment of a new connection to replace DVI interface, DisplayPort interface, USB, FireWire, HDMI and any other number of connections needs to be industry wide support.
“We are working with the industry to unify it,” Ur said. Intel, other companies have been introducing “Over the past several months,” trying to make the standards process is now beginning to seriously and included in the calculation of the company’s partners, consumer electronics and phones, the mobile phone market, he said.
Ziller will not say who else involved in the effort, but Intel announced Sony has its own influence, in many markets, many people support the statement.
“Sony is excited optical peak technology, Intel has been developing the potential of, I believe that it enables a new generation of high-speed device is connected, said:” Ryosuke Akahane, vice president of Sony’s Vaio business group.
Therefore, light-peak into a common port? “Intel’s long-term goal is to achieve that,” Ur said.
